Knight Street House

On this petite 84m2 site, an existing one storey brick workers cottage conceals a new two storey rear addition that overlooks Amy Street Reserve, a local park. With a modest budget it was essential to utilise every space for multiple uses to fit the family of four. The site, being long and very narrow, lacked sun light and air flow.

A central lightwell was carved into the belly of the building to increase natural light and encourage cooling breezes into the adjacent spaces.

The rear north façade includes large areas of glazing with carefully sized roof overhangs allowing warm winter sun to enter whilst stopping hot summer sun. A large rear roof sized and shaped to fit a solar array maximised power production for the home resulting in a thermally comfortable home.
